Assumptions will be close Tuesday, November 1st: All Saints Day, Holy Day of Obligation.
All Saints Day is a solemnity celebrated on the first of November, and is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States. This means that all Catholics are expected to attend Mass on this day, as they would on a Sunday. It was instituted to honor the saints, known and unknown, and, according to Urban IV, to supply any deficiencies in the faithful’s celebration of saints’ feasts during the year. The feast has been celebrated by the entire Church since the 9th century, along with its vigil (All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween).
